Motorized Scooter Classifications


Most states divide vehicles with two or three wheels into two categories: motorcycles and motorized bicycles. Anything with a motor 50cc or higher is considered a motorcycle, while anything under 50cc is a motorized bicycle. Sometimes the term “moped” is used in place of “motorized bicycle,” although there is no legal requirement for these vehicles to have pedals. A “50cc” scooter will actually displace 49cc to stay in the motorized bicycle category.
